BIOMEDevice Forum

If you're interested in a non-clinical career that involves medical devices, then consider attending the BIOMEDevice Forum this December 9-10 in San Jose, CA. This conference isn't only about medical devices - it also covers biotechnology, pharma, etc. Here's a snippet regarding this upcoming event:
The third annual BIOMEDevice San Jose Executive Forum is the West Coast’s premier executive level conference focusing on cross sector collaborations among the biotechnology, medical device, pharmaceutical, and diagnostic industries and convergent medical technologies.

Exploring ways to improve quality and reliability, shorten time to market, and increase efficiencies is always good business practice–but perhaps never more so than in today's challenging economy. BIOMEDevice, an MD&M Event, provides your best opportunity of the year to meet hundreds of knowledgeable suppliers and return to your work place with the fresh ideas you need to make your business stronger and more profitable.
This year's Forum will address the following topics:
• FDA-effective enforcement
• New patent rulings and their impact on convergent technologies
• Communicating the complexities of convergent technologies to the investment community
• Anticipating and adapting for the future of life science cross-sector collaborations

These types of events are excellent social networking opportunities. I wish I could go to all of these, but there's no way I could afford to travel that much (plus, the registration fee isn't inexpensive). However, if you're considering a career change and you wish to explore your options, then this type of event could be a good place to gain some exposure and meet people.

Non-clinical physician careers in the world of sales

I know several physicians, pharmacists, and nurses who have decided to pursue a non-clinical career in the world of sales. I'm not talking about car sales or real estate. I mean selling healthcare products or services. Some physicians transition into the non-clinical industry by entering as a pharma sales rep (short for representative). Others go into the medical device industry and become a device rep. There are opportunities to also work with sales people and to act as a subject matter expert who complements the sales team. You can also get involved selling other services, such as promotional and marketing campaigns, technology services, and more. As we see growth in health IT, we'll see a growing need for experts who can effectively sell electronic health record (EHR) solutions to physicians and hospitals.

The world of sales is very different from the clinical world of direct patient care. In this industry, you have to build and establish relationships with your clients (and potential clients). This often means that you'll be busy entertaining clients by taking them to sporting events and dining out at fancy restaurants. Sounds great, doesn't it? (especially if you're a sports fan) It can get tiring, but if you're a social butterfly, you'll flourish. So, if you're working in the northeast, you may want to keep in mind that you can get Mohegan Sun Arena Tickets for a good price if you look online. This may be important for you if you're working in pharma since many companies are located in the northeast corridor. Head up to Maine if you get a chance and make sure to get some fresh lobster. Working in Texas? Make sure you have some Toyota Center Tickets so that you can entertain your clients to a nice sporting event. Get ready to eat some BBQ or steak if you're visiting the south. Everything is big in Texas. Remember that there are medical device companies in midwest states like Ohio. Don't forget to get your Ohio State Buckeyes Football Tickets. The locals love state football and you'll want to impress your clients. Finally, if you get a chance to do some business in Canada, I suggest that you purchase your Rogers Centre Tickets early. While you're visiting Toronto, I hope you'll get a chance to eat some great food up there.

What's VBP and CER?

Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) and Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER).

How do these things influence the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical-surgical device industries? MM&M has a white paper titled, "Value-Based Purchasing and Comparative Effectiveness: Why the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, and Medical-Surgical Device Industries Should Embrace the Coming Market Evolution."

Here's a snippet about why this is so important for the healthcare industry: "For years, health economics has assisted stakeholders in making informed evaluations of treatment alternatives. Now, the advent of value-based purchasing (VBP) and comparative effectiveness research (CER) are leading to new methods for identifying products with the highest "value"—those that ideally deliver both overall cost reductions and improved patient health. These trends will increasingly impact the way healthcare products are marketed and sold. This paper examines the march to VBP and CER evaluations, and makes specific recommendations to manufacturers and brand teams regarding how combining clinical and economic data is essential to the successful marketing of drugs and devices."

Interested in learning more about VBP and CER? Then get more information and download the white paper by going here.

Enhancing Computer Skills to Become a Better Job Candidate

If you're considering a career switch into the non-clinical world of healthcare, I'd encourage you to invest some time and energy to enhance your computer skills. We now live in a mobile era where digital technology is ubiquitous and you will be expected to keep up with everyone else in the office. This means that you should get comfortable working on a laptop (or notebook) computer. If you've always had a desktop PC at home, consider getting a laptop so that you're familiar with some of the basics:
  • How do you turn on/off the wireless radio?
  • How do you connect it to a projector?
Of course, you'll also want to brush up on Microsoft Office. Office 2007 is quite different from the earlier versions (like Office 2003, Office XP, etc.). Finally, get very proficient with e-mail. You may not have an iPhone or BlackBerry now, but be prepared to use one if you join the corporate world of pharma/biotech/medical devices and other major healthcare industries. You may not carry a pager, but you'll probably be carrying something that's even worse (you may have no idea if you've never carried a PDA/smartphone).

Reductions in the Pharma Sales Force

According to a recent ZS Associates survey, the number of US sales reps has decreased 10% since 2007. We now have 92,000 pharma sales representatives and the prediction is that it will continue to drop to 75,000 by 2012. With all the recent news about mergers, I wonder how that will impact these numbers. Many doctors are unwilling to see sales reps, so pharma/biotech/medical device companies are looking for alternative ways to send their marketing messages. e-marketing has been one of these options that many companies have embraced.

United Healthcare, Aetna, and Kaiser Permanente

What do these 3 health plans have in common? United Healthcare, Aetna, and Kaiser Permanente

They now offer expanded coverage of continuous glucose monitors (CGM) for patients with type 1 diabetes. It's great to see advances in technology that have tangible impact on disease management.

Last month, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) published its 2009 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes. The new standards recommends the use of CGM in the following ways:

  • Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in conjunction with intensive insulin regimens can be a useful tool to lower A1C in selected adults (age ≥25 years) with type 1 diabetes.
  • Although the evidence for A1C lowering is less strong in children, teens, and younger adults, CGM may be helpful in these groups. Success correlates with adherence to ongoing use of the device.
  • CGM may be a supplemental tool to SMBG in those with hypoglycemia unawareness and/or frequent hypoglycemic episodes.
One of the studies that provided robust data on the use of CGM was this New England Journal of Medicine article:

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Continuous Glucose Monitoring Study Group: Continuous glucose monitoring and intensive treatment of type 1 diabetes. N Engl J Med 359:1464–1476, 2008

The next robotic pill that can deliver drugs: intelligent pill

Philips has now developed an innovative pill that can deliver medications in a specific part of the body. This could be one of the first therapeutic robotic pills if it makes it to the market. This iPill doesn't appear to have a camera, but it has built-in sensors to let it know when to release the drug. I wish I was still at MIT designing and creating prototypes of different medical devices.
