Starting a new trend: LinkedIn Fridays: Connect with someone new on LinkedIn

I'm starting a new trend: LinkedIn Fridays.

The purpose is to connect with someone new on LinkedIn on Friday. Wouldn't it be great if this went viral?

Set aside some time on your busy Friday to expand your social network. LinkedIn is the place for business professionals. If you're a doctor, expand your network on Doximity. If you want to reconnect with lost friends, get on Facebook.

Want to get started? Make sure you're connected with me: http://www.linkedin.com/in/drjosephkim

Then, go out and find someone you know and get connected online. As you expand your network, you'll see how it will help you professionally. The best part is that you'll be able to help others too.

3 ways to expand your network this fall

Most doctors have a difficult time appreciating the importance of networking. I'm not talking about computers or IT networks. I mean your professional social network of friends, family, and colleagues who can help you find a new job or advance in your career.

The fall is a great time to expand your network because of the festivities that surround certain holidays like Thanksgiving. Also, the fall prepares you for winter where you're sure to bump into people at holiday parties in December.

So, here are 3 ways that you can expand your network this fall:

1. Be smart on your smartphone. Get the social networking apps like LinkedIn or Facebook and connect with people. You can also exchange contact info easily through apps like Bump or you can take a photo of a business card using CardMunch.

2. Attend a local meetup on Meetup.com. Find a group of people who share common interests. Pursue your hobby. Meet with others who enjoy a common passion. Examples include: cooking, wine tasting, science fiction book readers, photography, pet owners, joggers and runners, and much more. It's valuable to have a social network that expands outside of your immediate profession.

3. Volunteer with a charitable organization this fall. Make the time to really help some people who are in need. You'll meet others who have a generous spirit and may be willing to help you expand your network of give you a possible lead for a new job.

So, are you willing to spend the time to expand your social network this fall?

Join an online social network this summer

I encourage you to make the time to join an online social network this summer. Next month, I'm teaching a course to physicians about the appropriate use of social media. There are a number of professional (and personal) benefits associated with the appropriate use of social media, so start with the basics and learn about privacy and security issues. Then, jump in and get started with either an open social networking community like LinkedIn, Facebook, etc., or go into a closed medical community (some of these are only for physicians) like Doximity, Sermo, or QuantiaMD.

I hope you'll join me for this course at the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) 2012 Summer Institute titled, "Social Media: Relevance and Appropriate Use for Physician Leaders." This course offers CME credit, so travel to Chicago this summer for this course while you attend the ACPE 2012 Summer Institute.

Doximity quickly becoming the professional LinkedIn for physicians

A few days ago, TechCrunch reported that "With 30K U.S. Doctors Now On Board, Doximity Is Fast Becoming The LinkedIn For Physicians."

Doximity gives physicians a private network through which to connect and collaborate on patient treatment or identify experts for patient referrals.

I'd have to agree. Doximity is led by Jeff Tangney, co-founder and former President & COO of Epocrates.

When I first heard about Doximity, I said to myself, "why another social network for physicians? I don't get it." Then, I got to meet some folks at Doximity and started learning more about the concept and vision. I also got invited to join the Doximity Medical Advisory Board and I witnessed the evolution of the platform and saw new features pop up like iRounds, DocNews, and DocText. I began to really understand and appreciate the value that Doximity offers.

If you care about your online reputation and you're looking for an effective way to market yourself online, then take a look at Doximity. It's free to join, but you'll need to use your real name (no aliases or screen names please). Plus, you'll want to have a professional photo. Sounds like LinkedIn, doesn't it? If you're a physician, you may not be familiar with LinkedIn. So, think about a professional Facebook where you are interacting with other physicians purely for professional purposes. You're providing clinical insights, sharing ideas, referring patients, and discussing relevant clinical and non-clinical topics. Since you're using your real name, you're accountable to what you say, so you're probably going to avoid nonsensical rants and raves, strong political debates, or highly-controversial and sensitive discussions around religion/sex/etc.

Today, when there are so many physician rating sites like HealthGrades, RateMDs, Vitals, and others, physicians care about online reputations and rankings. They like to be listed in "Top Doctors" or "Best Doctor" lists. Patients also like seeing their doctors on these lists and in airplane magazines.

Doximity helps you promote yourself online.

Take a look at Rafael Lugo, MD. He's a surgeon in Texas and you'll see that he has a "Patient's Choice 2010" badge next to his name here:
https://www.doximity.com/pub/rafael-lugo-md

Here's another example: Howard Luks, MD. He's an orthopedic surgeon in NY and he has several badges: Top Doctor, Most Compassionate Doctor, and Patient's Choice 2010.
https://www.doximity.com/pub/howard-luks-md

So, whether you're in an academic center or in private practice, consider how you can leverage the Internet to build your online reputation. If you've been awarded some type of "Top Doctor" recognition or reward, share that information online using a professional platform like Doximity. Plus, if you're still building your practice, Doximity can help you get more patients and more referrals.

On Doximity, you can also have public or private discussions with other physicians. You can have an open dialogue through iRounds (similar to a Facebook wall at this point), or you can send a private HIPAA-compliant messaging system called DocText (a free secure SMS service if you're using a mobile device).

Finally, remember that Doximity is still in beta, so there are a number of features that haven't been released yet. Plus, you can expect to see ongoing changes, updates, revisions, enhancements, etc.

Full Disclosure: I serve on the Doximity Medical Advisory Board. The opinions shared above are my own. I was not paid to write this article. I am not paid to refer physicians to join Doximity. I have no relevant financial relationships with LinkedIn or physician rating websites.

Expand your social network this holiday season

Every winter, I encourage people to expand their social networks. You're probably going to be spending time with people who may be able to help you directly or indirectly. Hence, it's to your benefit to expand your network by telling family members and trusted friends about your career goals and your plans for the future.

This holiday season, make sure to connect with people on online social networks like LinkedIn. You may be surprised to discover that some close friends and family members may be connected to people who might be able to help you transition into a new job or who might be willing to provide you with more information about a different industry. Don't be shy of sites like Facebook (great for staying in touch with close friends and family).

Business Networking Groups on Meetup

Are you looking to network with business executives in your city or neighborhood? You may find some interesting groups by searching for "business networking" groups on Meetup.com. You may also find some social clubs and other interest groups on Meetup. For instance, you may meet people who have an interest in health information technology, social media, medical devices, biotech/pharmaceuticals, entrepreneurship, mobile devices, writing, etc.

Meetup is the world's largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 2,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.

Meetup's mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.

Find a local business networking "meetup" in your area

Meetup.com is a great place where you can find clubs, gatherings, or organizations that may help you as you explore the business world. In major metropolitan areas, you'll find meetups like "business leaders meetup," or entrepreneurial clubs where you can meet people starting new companies and looking for investors or consultants to help them get started. I recently began looking for some business meetups in my area and here's what I found:

  • The Philadelphia Business Meetup
  • The Philadelphia Business Networking Group
  • Philly Tech Meetup
  • Entrepreneurs Roundtable Philadelphia
  • The Philadelphia Blogger Meetup Group
  • EXTREME Business Growth for Philadelphia Entrepreneurs

I joined these Meetup groups. I doubt that I'll attend every meeting, but if I'm able to attend 10% of them, I'm sure that I'll benefit from the networking. If you're looking to find business executives who wish to expand their social network, see what you find by visiting Meetup.com.

5 tips for physicians interested in using LinkedIn professionally to find a new job

Last month, there was an article in amednews titled, "10 tips to using LinkedIn." The author did a nice job writing 10 practical tips for physicians who may be relatively new to the world of social media and professional social networking online. Her suggestions are very practical for any physician who is thinking about the possibility that he/she may be looking for a new job somewhere in the future.

I use LinkedIn all the time and I invite people to connect with me all the time. You can get to my LinkedIn profile here. Don't forget to join the Non-Clinical Jobs Group.

The MIT Institute Career Assistance Network (ICAN)

The Institute Career Assistance Network (ICAN) connects MIT alumni with each other and with students to facilitate career strategies, gather quality advice, and open up important networking connections. More than 3,000 alumni across an array of fields have offered to share their wealth of experience as advisors. Advisors may communicate by telephone, e-mail, or in personal meetings.

As a member of the ICAN, I see tremendous value in the college alumni network. If you're plugged into your college alumni network, what are you waiting for? Find your classmates on social networking websites like Facebook or LinkedIn. You can probably find classmates by using Google too. Discover what they're doing and reconnect. Learn from their stories. Get inspired. Ask them to introduce you to other executives in their professional network.

Using LinkedIn to Boost Your Career Exploration

Author: Heather Fork, MD, CPCC

Is your LinkedIn profile helping in your non-clinical career search? If not, you may be getting stuck at an all too common place-actually speaking with people who can offer valuable advice. This can happen from just not having the experience of successfully contacting someone, or from the reluctance to ask a favor of a complete stranger. Once you experience the power and ease of using LinkedIn for networking, you’ll be sold.

Recently I contacted 4 people through LinkedIn. Two were recruiters, one was a medical writer, and the other was a Medical Science Liaison. Each responded back to my inquiries, with one hardy soul calling me back from the ICU! We had great conversations and I felt like I had made some new friends. I did my best to find ways to be helpful in return.

If you’d like to take more advantage of the power of LinkedIn, here are some steps for getting started:

1. Create your LinkedIn Profile. Build up contacts by inviting those you know and joining relevant groups. If you are connected to someone with 500 contacts, you have potential access to all of these people.

2. Search your area of interest by INDUSTRIES, JOBS, COMPANIES or GROUPS. By clicking on Advanced in the search box, you will be able to target your search.
