Generating supplemental income through telemedicine

These days, a growing number of physicians are eager to leave clinical practice to enter the non-clinical business world of health care. However, there is also an opportunity to generate income by virtually "visiting" patients using your webcam and a secure telemedicine portal that offers patients direct access to physicians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You could sign up to provide care through one of these portals, but you'll need to be familiar with interstate telemedicine regulations governing medical licensure. Otherwise, you could end up on a news story because you were practicing medicine in a state (treating a patient who lived in another state) where you did not have a medical license.

The issue concerning medical licensure and telemedicine is a hot topic right now. Many regulatory bodies recognize that telemedicine is a cost-effective way to deliver care, but many physicians face barriers regarding the issue of interstate medical licensure. It's rather cumbersome to get a license in every state. Plus, some states have requirements that literally make it impossible for you to get a license unless you live there.

I've been writing about telemedicine on one of my other websites (see those stories here) and I will be continuing to follow the telemedicine industry closely. There are many overlapping themes with mobile health (mHealth) and telemedicine given that the technologies are converging and mobile devices are becoming powerful telemedicine tools as well. Get familiar with telemedicine because you won't want to miss the opportunity to monetize those virtual visits with your patients. The next major trend will be some sort of concierge televisit through the use of smartphones and tablets.

How does your salary affect your overall job happiness?

These days, doctor salaries are under scrutiny because of the public perception that highly-compensated physicians are driving up health care costs. The reality is that there are some physicians who work full-time and don't even generate a six-figure salary. Of course, there are also medical specialists and subspecialists who generate well over $300,000 to 400,000 each year. I also know some physicians who essentially work 2 jobs (a standard job + moonlighting so much that they're over 80 hrs/week). They make a lot of money, but they're always working.

How does your salary affect your overall job happiness?  If you feel underpaid, that's one thing. If you feel that your salary is a "fair" salary for the type of work you do, then how much happier would you be if your salary went up? How much higher would it need to go up in order for you to feel a sense of greater happiness?

Deep Medicare pay cuts could drive physicians to seek sources for supplemental income

Deep Medicare pay cuts may drive physicians to seek out ways to generate supplemental income. Some physicians may drop Medicare by changing their Medicare participation (PAR) status to non-participation (non-PAR). Of course, this will mean that thousands of Medicare patients may need to find a new health care provider.

Another option is for physicians to find ways to supplement their income through a variety of non-clinical jobs and opportunities. Some may wish to explore the world of medical writing while others may carve out some time to do some consulting. Many physicians are already involved in medicolegal review or reviewing medical charts to assess hospital admissions around "medical necessity." Adventurous physicians who have access to capital are starting their own companies (often on the side while they continue to practice medicine).

Energy deregulation leading to passive income

Earlier, I wrote about business opportunities related to energy deregulation in this post and a number of you reached out with questions specific to these energy companies. If you choose to dive into one of these business opportunities, make sure you research the energy companies. Some of them will go out of business in a few years. I personally recommend Ignite/Stream Energy and I have a number of reasons why. If you'd like to join a supportive team as a  business associate, make sure to contact me. It's critical that you join the right team that will actively help you recruit business associates and customers.

How physicians can earn supplemental income: energy deregulation

Some of you live in states that have been affected by energy deregulation. In my state (Pennsylvania), energy deregulation hit us fairly recently and a number of energy companies have been using multi-level marketing (MLM) strategies to acquire new customers.

Unlike traditional multi-level marketing (MLM), these opportunities related to energy deregulation seem to be quite effective. This is especially true if you're a physician and you see a high volume of patients each day.

In our area, Ignite/Stream Energy and Ambit Energy seem to have the most activity. I know several primary care physicians who are generating a significant amount of supplemental income through these business opportunities. If you're living in a state that has recently been impacted by energy deregulation and you'd like to learn more about some of these business opportunities, contact me because I can help you develop a successful business strategy.

How can you earn a six figure income by blogging?

Many people ask why I'm such an active blogger. My answer is simple: I love what I blog about.

When you're writing about your hobbies and passions, it doesn't feel like a chore. Blogging can consume a significant amount of time on the weekends (that's when I mainly write), but it can also pay quite well if you have a targeted audience. That's where people almost fall out of their chairs when they hear how much you could make as a professional blogger. I personally know a number of bloggers who are generating a high six figure income just from blogging. You don't have to sell any products or services to generate that type of income. You can make money using a passive income strategy: advertisements.

For me, blogging has become a second career. Consider it one of my parallel careers.

Medical school admissions consultants at Kaplan

Did you hire a consultant to help you get accepted into medical school? There are enough students out there who are willing to pay for such services. Do you have what it takes to guide pre-med students through the process of applying and getting accepted into medical school? Maybe you'd like to generate some supplemental income by working as a medical school admissions consultant.
Kaplan offers the most experienced team of medical school admissions consultants available. Most have served on admissions committees—many at the top med schools—and they bring really cogent insight into the admissions decision-making process. They'll work with you to build the best application package possible; one that positions you well for acceptance.
Take a look at some of these physician profiles. Several of these physician consultants have worked with Kaplan for a number of years (and I'm sure that most of them do this part-time).

Doctors generating passive income

What if you could sit back, relax, and generate passive income by doing nothing? That sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? If you're a successful investor, then you've probably generated a significant amount of passive income by allowing others to take your investment and multiply it through their hard effort.

Another way you can generate passive income is through royalties. Here's how Wikipedia defines royalties:
Royalties (sometimes, running royalties, or private sector taxes) are usage-based payments made by one party (the "licensee") to another (the "licensor") for ongoing use of an asset, sometimes an intellectual property (IP) right.
One way doctors often collect royalties is by authoring books. If you write a great book and millions of people buy your book, then you'll be generating passive income. It's a great way to earn supplemental income while you continue working as a physician. Another example is by collecting revenues generated through advertisements on your website. If you can create a website that generates a significant volume of traffic, then you'll have the means to sell advertising space and generate income. At first, it might be active income since you'll probably be working pretty hard to maintain and build your website. However, you could reach a point where you could allow someone else to maintain the site. Or, some websites will sustain themselves as people visit from search engines.

This type of passive income could also become a source of spending money once you retire. After all, who wants to work when you retire? If you start a blog now and maintain it periodically, perhaps you'll have something valuable that you can pass on to your kids. Maybe you'll leave behind a legacy that's more important than the income you'll be generating.

Blogging jobs

Many people have asked me, "How much money can you make blogging?" The answer really depends on multiple factors such as website traffic, advertisement arrangements, sponsorship, etc.

Professional bloggers make a very wide range of salaries. Part-time bloggers make anywhere from $50/week to over $1,000/week. So, if you're thinking about getting started with blogging, you should be familiar with the market rate for blog posts. Many publishers and organizations will pay freelance bloggers up to $20 per article/blog post or $20/hr. Blogs that focus on health care may pay more ($30/article), but once you get experienced and established, you can find some publishers that are willing to pay over $100/article.

I know several people who currently have full-time blogging careers. Most people start out as a freelance blogger and then as they find more opportunities, they may slowly transition into a full-time blogger.

If you're looking for some part-time work and if you enjoy writing, then maybe you'll want to get involved with blogging. You should be warned because blogging can consume quite a bit of time. Once you get established, the income potential can go up significantly if you create your own blog, publish innovative content, and generate a high volume of traffic each month. Your income will be based primarily from selling advertisements on your site and Google makes this very easy (and automated) through Google AdSense.

Generating supplemental income by performing cosmetic procedures

What do you know about dermatology? Aesthetic cosmetic services is a multibillion dollar market. The most common procedures include: botulinum toxin injections, microdermabrasion, collagen injection, laser hair removal, and chemical peels. There are many family physicians, general internists, and other non-dermatologists who are performing elective cosmetic surgical procedures in the office. These physicians are earning a tremendous amount of supplemental income. In fact, some family physicians have even stopped practicing primary care and have devoted their careers towards cosmetic procedures.

On the AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) website, you'll find several articles related to aesthetic cosmetic procedures. One of them, written in 2007, is titled, "Aesthetic Cosmetic Procedures Can Be Boon to FPs." Here's a snippet from that article:
According to a recently released survey from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 11.5 million cosmetic procedures, surgical and nonsurgical, were performed in 2006 in the United States, an overall increase of 446 percent since the collection of statistics began in 1997. The survey reports that Americans spent a whopping $4.5 billion for nonsurgical procedures, with botulinum toxin injections and laser hair removal -- procedures easily performed in FPs' offices -- topping the list.

How to make $50 each day by writing (or blogging)

Many doctors look for ways to make supplemental income. That's why some doctors spend so much time moonlighting in emergency rooms. Now, suppose you could make $50 every day by doing some short writing. That would be roughly $1,500 each month if you worked 30 days. This equates to $18,000 each year. How much time would it take to earn $50 each day? Are you a fast writer or do you frequently experience writer's block?

Most of us are probably too busy to write every day, but what if you set aside a chunk of time each week to do some dedicated writing or blogging? Would that be feasible? Would you enjoy writing?

Some of you may wonder: "Where did $50 come from? How did I come up with that figure?"
  • If you're an entry-level medical writer/blogger, then you can expect to make up to $25 for writing short articles and blog posts for large major publishers. (some publishers will pay as low as $10 per post, but you're likely to find some that will pay as high as $25). If you write 2 blog posts, you've made $50.
  • If you're a seasoned medical writer, then you can make up to $50 or more per short article.
