Q: I'm interested in applying for a medical director job in pharma and biotech companies. Are these jobs only for physicians, or do non-physicians hold medical director positions?

A: It depends on the type of medical director position. In many pharma and biotech companies, certain medical director positions may be held by a range of health professionals including physicians (MD, DO), pharmacists (PharmD), researchers (PhD), advanced practice nurses, and others. Other "medical director" positions may be only for physicians who have subspecialty training and an active medical license.

The following are snippets from several different job postings for "medical director" positions in pharma and biotech companies:

This position requires a minimum of a masters level advanced scientific/medical degree (e.g. MD, PhD, PharmD, MPH or other masters level degree), with experience in Neurology

Physician (M.D. or equivalent) ideally with board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Surgery. Subspecialty training/certification is a plus. Active or eligibility for a US Medical license is required.

MD strongly preferred (PhD or Pharm D level degree or equivalent can also be considered); Board certification or board eligible; Advanced training in the respective therapeutic area strongly preferred

MD, DO, or advanced relevant medical degree preferable with clinical, research and/or industry experience in cellular therapy and Hematology/Oncology.

Advanced degree required (PharmD, MD, PhD) with sleep and psychiatry training or experience preferred.

The goal of this program is to create a "culture of wellness, improving practice efficiencies, enhancing individual physician well-being, and reducing administrative burdens."
This program will address many dimensions that impact physician wellness. The ACP will also continue to advocate for system changes, identify practical ways to improve the clinical practice environment, and encourage physicians to maintain their own personal health and wellness.
While a certificate is not equivalent to a certification, it provides value for professionals interested in developing, understanding, managing and integrating medical information systems in healthcare organizations.

Here are a few examples of graduate certificate programs in healthcare or clinical informatics:

UMass Boston Healthcare Informatics Certificate
UC Davis Health Informatics Certificate Program
USF Health’s Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics
Drexel University Certificate in Healthcare Informatics
Boston University Health Informatics Graduate Certificate

Physicians may also wish to consider pursuing board certification in clinical informatics. Broadly speaking, there have been two different possible pathways for subspecialty certification eligibility in clinical informatics by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (or the American Board of Pathology if you're a pathologist):

ACGME Accredited Fellowship Pathway

Practice Pathway

In the future, the only pathway for physicians to board certification in clinical informatics will be by completing a fellowship.

Nurses can pursue certification in informatics from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Some may choose to obtain a masters degree in informatics. Those programs may be called clinical informatics, medical informatics, health informatics, healthcare informatics, biomedical informatics, bioinformatics, etc. While those may all sound like they refer to the same curriculum, there are some key differences across those different types of programs.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109404223592397352.post-74136144594247800612017-11-15T00:00:00.000-05:002017-11-15T05:08:53.934-05:00Article: Professional Satisfaction and the Career Plans of US PhysiciansRecent article published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings titled, "Professional Satisfaction and the Career Plans of US Physicians."

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between burnout, satisfaction with electronic health records and work-life integration, and the career plans of US physicians.

Conclusion:
Nearly 1 in 5 US physicians intend to reduce clinical work hours in the next year, and roughly 1 in 50 intend to leave medicine altogether in the next 2 years to pursue a different career. If physicians follow through on these intentions, it could profoundly worsen the projected shortage of US physicians.

When you dig into their data analysis, it's no surprise that they found the following:

Notably, after adjusting for other personal and professional characteristics, physicians who were burned out, dissatisfied with work-life integration, and dissatisfied with the EHR were more likely to intend to reduce clinical work in the next 12 months and were more likely to intend to leave their current position in the next 24 months.

Burnout was even more strongly related to whether physicians intended to leave medicine altogether to pursue a different career.

These results were based on surveys performed between August 28, 2014, and October 6, 2014. It would be very interesting and insightful to repeat this study in 2017-2018 and see how these numbers have changed. What are hospitals, health systems, and group practices doing to address concerns about burnout, work-life integration, and EHR dissatisfaction?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109404223592397352.post-33217444354429239272017-11-13T00:00:00.000-05:002017-11-13T21:00:22.144-05:00What is a physician advisor? The job title "medical director" may refer to many different types of roles and responsibilities depending on the work setting.
