2017 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government

The American Public Health Association has announced their call for applications for the 2017 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government. This is the ninth year APHA is offering this fellowship, which has been described as an “amazing,” “phenomenal” and “life altering” experience by previous fellows.

Candidates must have strong public health credentials and be able to spend one year in Washington, D.C. The fellow will have the option of working in the House or Senate on legislative and policy issues such as creating healthy communities, improving health equity, addressing environmental health concerns, population health or the social determinants of health.

Training for the fellowship will begin in January 2017 so you must be able to move to the Washington, D.C., area in January. The fellowship provides a unique learning experience and demonstrates the value and need for basing policy on sound science. Throughout the year, the fellow will gain a practical knowledge of government and how the public policy process works.

The fellowship aims to:

• Establish and nurture critical links between federal decision-makers and public health professionals;
• Educate public health professionals about the legislative process and the skills necessary to be successful, including the ability to translate complex public health issues into legislative, regulatory and policy initiatives;
• Increase the visibility and impact public health professionals in the policy arena;
• Increase attention to and focus on the social determinants of health and the goal of improving health equity and creating healthy communities;
• Support the inclusion of sound public health science in policy; and
• Create a culture of policy engagement for public health professionals.

Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) Medical Informatics Fellowship

The ONC is offering a Medical Informatics Fellowship to promote standards-based interoperability, clinical quality improvement and clinical decision support.

The Medical Informatics Fellowship is a 1-2 year term appointment in which the physician serves in the Office of Clinical Quality and Safety, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).

Goals:

• Apply knowledge and expertise to advance the ONC mission of interoperability.
• Understand the role the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT in regulating and certifying health information technologies.
• Understand how Health IT impacts the delivery of health care today and serves as a driver of practice transformation and payment reforms.

Required:

By completion of the program the Medical Informatics Fellow is expected to:

• Complete one (1) written critical analysis of an area of medical informatics or applications of health IT outlining current opportunities, challenges and recommended solutions. May be a thought or white paper for publication on healthit.gov or in a peer reviewed journal.
• Present and /or facilitate an educational Training Day session at the ONC Annual Meeting on a relevant topic of choice based on current work activities.
• Organize, lead and conduct a minimum of four (4) site visits to ambulatory and inpatient medical facilities (1 per quarter). Document and report findings and observations to key ONC senior leaders and staff.
• Lead a policy issue work stream as identified by the Director of the Office of Policy or a serve supporting role for an ONC Standards and Interoperability Framework Initiative.

Health IT jobs for physicians who are board certified in clinical informatics

Looking for a new job in health IT? Are you working as a medical director of informatics? As a CMIO?

In case you haven't heard, you can now get board certified in clinical informatics. Clinical Informatics is a subspecialty within the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM). Right now, you can either go through a formal fellowship in informatics or you can demonstrate expertise based on your working experience.

Starting in 2018, all applicants for certification in Clinical Informatics will have to complete successfully a minimum of 24 months in an ACGME-accredited Clinical Informatics fellowship program.

Physicians who practice Clinical Informatics collaborate with other health care and information technology professionals to analyze, design, implement and evaluate information and communication systems that enhance individual and population health outcomes, improve patient care, and strengthen the clinician-patient relationship. Clinical Informaticians use their knowledge of patient care combined with their understanding of informatics concepts, methods, and tools to: assess information and knowledge needs of health care professionals and patients; characterize, evaluate, and refine clinical processes; develop, implement, and refine clinical decision support systems; and lead or participate in the procurement, customization, development, implementation, management, evaluation, and continuous improvement of clinical information systems.

Health Disparities Service Fellowship

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH), is seeking a Survey Statistician, Social Scientist, or Health Scientist for a Health Disparities Service Fellowship in NCHS’ Office of the Center Director. NCHS is the principal health statistics agency in the United States. As 1 of the 10 centers and institutes that constitutes CDC, NCHS’ mission is to compile accurate, relevant, and timely statistical information to guide actions and policies that improve the health of the American people.

The Fellow, reporting to the Director of Extramural Research, will develop a research program to examine health disparities using data from across the Center. NCHS has four major data collection programs: the Division of Vital Statistics, including the National Survey of Family Growth, the Division of Health Interview Statistics, the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, and the Division of Health Care Statistics. The Fellow may be involved in developing data collection materials and protocols, monitoring survey data collection progress and quality, performing statistical analyses, and preparing publications on issues in racial and ethnic health disparities. The Fellow also will work closely with OMH, and specific projects will be determined jointly with the Fellow supervisor and OMH staff.

HIMSS Fellow, HHS Innovator In Resident Program

The purpose of this position is for the HIMSS Innovator in Residence (IIR) to work for two (2) years as an employee of HIMSS and on behalf of its stakeholders to develop a vision, strategy and implementation of consistent patient data matching in health. The IIR will work onsite at Health and Human Services (HHS) with the HHS Chief Technology Officer, and National Coordinator for Health IT, and others for exposure to a wide range of policy, stakeholder engagement, and technical expertise. The IIR will work with stakeholders in business, research, healthcare organizations, consumers/patient organizations, and others with interest in transforming the healthcare system in America. The IIR will bring technology development experiences and project management experiences to enable broad engagement in solving challenges in record matching approaches.

The IIR will demonstrate results of this entrepreneurial activity by completing a framework for technology and policy solutions to help provide consistent matching of a patient’s healthcare records thereby enhancing the safety and efficacy of healthcare. The IIR activities will lead to establishing metrics of patient matching technology approaches and create a pathway evaluating solutions. Successes will include engaging stakeholders to adopt approaches that will set in motion improvements in technology that improve consistent and reliable patient matching of records. UCLA intercampus medical genetics post-doctoral research fellowship

Academic Laboratory Research Training
Understanding the role genetics plays in both health and disease provides a path to integrating scientific discoveries into diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of many diseases, both rare and common, as well as overall improvement in the health of society.

The goal for Research orientated trainees is to guide them to become independent, productive investigators through training in a broad, in-depth educational program covering all aspects of human genetics, molecular biology, cell biology and related fields.

Trainees will receive basic research training in medical genetics of the highest quality and sufficient intensity and duration to produce independent productive investigators. Each fellow will develop his/her own independent research program under the guidance of his/her research mentor(s). Trainees will obtain experience in designing and performing research projects, writing up and presenting the results at meetings, and writing manuscripts and grants.

Applications are now available for the twentieth class of the Health Policy Fellowship.  The Health Policy Fellowship is a collaborative effort between Ohio University and the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) to train mid-career physicians and professionals closely associated with the osteopathic profession to become effective advocates for patients by learning the skills necessary to understand and influence health policy on the local, state, and national levels.

The AOA certificate program provides a series of ten on-site seminars in cities around the country. Each seminar covers a specific health policy topic, and the year culminates in the presentation of Fellows’ health policy briefs in Washington, DC.

The United Hospital Fund offers a Clinical Quality Fellowship Program for early- and mid-career physicians and nurses with the specific purpose of helping them to lead and champion quality improvement and patient safety efforts within their hospitals.

Surgical Fellowship

RWJ Health Policy Fellowship

Initiated in 1973, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Health Policy Fellows program seeks exceptional mid-career health professionals and behavioral and social scientists with an interest in health and health care who:

1. possess the skills and commitment to use the fellowship experience to provide leadership in improving health, health care and health policy at the national, state or local level;
2. bring a depth of expertise and knowledge about health and health care to the policy-making process; and
3. can offer an informed perspective on important and complex challenges facing health policy-makers.

Fellows actively participate in the formulation of national health policies in congressional offices and accelerate their careers as leaders in health policy. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) conducts and administers the fellowship with funding support from and in collaboration with RWJF.

Up to six fellows will be selected for the program. The Health Policy Fellows program is a residential fellowship experience in Washington, DC, which prepares individuals to influence the future of health care and accelerate their own career development. Fellows are able to continue their health policy activities for up to 24 months after the Washington placement period.
