Associate Director, Translational Medicine
Regeneron - Tarrytown, NY 10591
Job Summary and Essential Functions:
If you are looking for an uncommon opportunity -- a chance to join an organization known for its scientific excellence in the research and development of pharmaceuticals -- it's time to consider Regeneron.
Regeneron is a fully integrated biopharmaceutical company that discovers, invents, develops, manufactures, and commercializes medicines for the treatment of serious medical conditions. Regeneron markets three products in the United States, EYLEA® (aflibercept) Injection, ZALTRAP® (ziv-aflibercept) Injection for Intravenous Infusion, and ARCALYST® (rilonacept) Injection for Subcutaneous Use; ZALTRAP is co-commercialized with Sanofi. Phase 3 studies are in progress with EYLEA in two additional indications and with product candidates sarilumab and REGN727. Regeneron has active research and development programs in many disease areas, including ophthalmology, inflammation, cancer, and hypercholesterolemia.

Amgen laying off about 380 R&D workers
According to this story on the Los Angeles Times, Amgen is cutting jobs in research and development (R&D).
The layoffs represent about 6% of Amgen's total 6,700 workers in research and development. Amgen employs about 17,600 workers globally.
A number of years ago, physicians and scientists who worked in R&D had a level of job security that pales in comparison to today. Changes in the global economy along with regulatory challenges in drug development have led to cuts in R&D in many biopharmaceutical companies.

"Physician Careers in the Biopharma Industry"
I'll be speaking at BioConference Live 2011. My session is titled, "Physician careers in the biopharma industry" and it will occur on WED June 15, 2011 from 2 to 3 pm EDT.
Abstract: As the health care industry undergoes significant changes over the next several years, we can anticipate that more physicians will be eager to leave clinical medicine and pursue careers in the biopharma industry. As a result, it becomes critical for biopharma professionals to recruit the best talent and to prepare new physicians for an industry career in pharmaceutical medicine.
This presentation will reveal physician attitudes and career trends that reflect the transition process as physicians consider careers in the biopharma industry. We will also examine results from recent physician surveys and polls to explore myths and misconceptions that are highly prevalent as physicians prepare for a career transition. Finally, we will explore effective strategies that will help physicians will make a smooth and successful transition into the pharmaceutical industry.

Biotechnology Professional Mentoring System
Biotechnology Professional Mentoring System
Starting in fall 2009, the graduate biotechnology program at University of Maryland University College (UMUC)—recognized as a Professional Science Master's (PSM) —launched an exciting new web-based mentoring program where biotechnology professionals and UMUC biotechnology alumni help students reach their professional goals. This program has been developed as part of a four-year U.S. Department of Education, FIPSE Grant to UMUC that started in fall 2008. The objectives of the program are to:
* Increase awareness of workforce needs among students
* Facilitate in the identification of a student’s professional goals
* Help a student in achieving their professional goals
* Promote interaction between academia and industry/government
* Provide opportunities for students to find the “best fit” jobs upon graduation
