Biomedical Enterprise Program @ Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST)

If I could live anywhere in the world and go back to school for anything, I'd choose the Biomedical Enterprise Program @ Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST). MIT recently launched their new Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES). The Division of Health Sciences and Technology is IMES’ primary research program.

Biomedical Enterprise Program (BEP)

This program prepares students to lead the transfer of new healthcare technologies from concept to product development to clinical adoption. Students take preclinical and engineering courses with other HST students and business courses at Sloan. They learn to address the needs of starting, growing, and managing a biomedical enterprise, and paired with a physician-scientist, complete a hands-on hospital-based clinical experience. Individuals who need training in both management and science pursue an SM from HST and either an MBA or SM from Sloan, while those who have already earned a graduate degree in management pursue an SM from HST.

The next five years will bear witness to major changes in our nation's healthcare system. These changes will be expensive, expansive, painful to implement and yet, entirely necessary. Please join us for this special event, to be held on April 25, 2011 at the historic Harvard Club of Boston. A full-time MBA at Harvard takes 2 years. However, most full-time MBA students have a few years of working experience before they go to business school. Regardless, the long path to medicine probably doesn't make much sense if you're aiming to make 6 figures before you're in your mid-to-late twenties

This morning at the Association of MD/MBA Programs (AMMP) 8th Annual Conference, Peter Slavin, MD, MBA (President of Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School) gave a great presentation about health care management this morning.

He started his presentation by emphasizing the importance of work/life balance. We all need to be reminded of that, don't we?

So, here are some of the key management challenges:
  • Operations
  • Finances
  • Quality/patient safety
  • Research
  • Education
  • Public policy
He went into 3 case studies and I'll highlight some of the points from these case studies:

Save over 50% on Harvard Business Review

If I could recommend a single business magazine, it would be Harvard Business Review. I'm not biased since I went to MIT. Technology Review is a great magazine, but you won't find the type of business content that you'll find on Harvard Business Review.

I find myself more interested in business these days. This is one of the main reasons why I'm seriously thinking about business school. I just wish I had more time to keep up with my family, my side ventures, and everything else. If I were to add business school to my life right now, something would have to give. So, for now I will read business magazines and listen to business school podcasts during my drive to and from work.
