Expand your social network this holiday season
Every winter, I encourage people to expand their social networks. You're probably going to be spending time with people who may be able to help you directly or indirectly. Hence, it's to your benefit to expand your network by telling family members and trusted friends about your career goals and your plans for the future.
This holiday season, make sure to connect with people on online social networks like LinkedIn. You may be surprised to discover that some close friends and family members may be connected to people who might be able to help you transition into a new job or who might be willing to provide you with more information about a different industry. Don't be shy of sites like Facebook (great for staying in touch with close friends and family).

Physician leaders learning about social media #ACPEfall2011
I'm in Arizona attending the 2011 ACPE Fall Institute and today, I attended a new session titled, "Social Media and mHealth Care." The room was full of physician leaders who are eager to learn about social media. How well do you understand social media (Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc.)? This new digital technology is here to stay and we're seeing a growing number of patients and health care professionals using social media. Therefore, it's important to understand the evolving trends around social media.
The speaker for this course was Ari Lightman, BS, MS, MBA, from Carnegie Mellon University. Ari is a Practice Professor, Digital Media and Marketing at the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University. Ari teaches classes focused on assessing and measuring the impact of emerging technologies. Ari has over 15 years of experience in new technology development and commercialization. He is the founder of Broadside Consulting, which provides consulting services to companies/organizations around collaboration, innovation and new technology development. Earlier in his career, Ari was a member of several successful entrepreneurial high tech ventures where he was integral in raising over $60 M in venture financing, securing key partnerships and sales, and spearheading several initiatives from product management to business development.

The value of networking online with other physicians
Many physicians intentionally choose to avoid online social networking websites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Physicians want to maintain their privacy and they don’t want patients “finding” them on these public sites.
If you’re thinking about a career transition or if you’re looking for non-clinical jobs that may provide supplemental income, it is very important to expand your social network by engaging others on social networking websites. There are ways you can do this while you still maintain your privacy.
Physicians are finding job opportunities by networking with other physicians online. Online social networking is also a valuable tool for those who want to spend some time conducting informational interviews. You may find interesting people who may be willing to provide you with information about how he/she reached that point in his/her career. You may find physicians working in industry who would be willing to speak with you about day-to-day responsibilities, tasks, challenges, and opportunities. You may even find physicians who are willing to introduce you to hiring managers and other executives in their own organizations.

Happy Birthday NonClinicalJobs.com!
The URL http://NonClinicalJobs.com/ was born on Feb 15, 2009.
Although the website (and its content) is older, the URL "NonClinicalJobs.com" is only 2 years old. Today, we became a toddler!
Before 2009, I was using the free Google Blogger URL http://nonclinical.blogspot.com/ (and some of you may still remember that old URL). If you've bookmarked that old URL, you'll see that it now redirects to http://www.NonClinicalJobs.com
Blogging was originally a hobby and I didn't turn it into a business yet until the spring of 2009 when I added NonClinicalJobs.com to the HCPLive Network. Thank you HCPLive for all of your help and support!
Who would have thought that $10 could multiply like this? Two years ago (Feb 15, 2009), I paid $10 so that I could purchase the URL http://NonClinicalJobs.com/ and I converted this blog into a profitable business. That $10 investment has paid huge dividends over the past 2 years and I'm excited to see how NonClinicalJobs.com will continue to grow over the next few years.
Here's where we stand today (Feb 15 2011):

Connect with me on these social networks
I like to invite you to connect with me on these social networks:
Don't have time for so many different social networks? OK, that's fine. If I had to pick 2 social networks, they would be LinkedIn and Facebook. Don't want your patients finding you on Facebook? You can adjust your privacy settings so that people can't find you. Don't have time for 2 social networks. Well, if I had to pick only 1 network (for professional networking), it would be LinkedIn. So, at the very least you should consider joining LinkedIn and creating a free profile.

What happens if someone tries to Google you?
What happens if someone tries to Google you? Do you a strong presence on the Internet? Potential employers may Google your name if you're applying for a job. Why? They want to know if you've published anything. They want to know if people have written about you. Perhaps there's some information on the Internet that could damage your reputation.
If you don't have a strong presence on the Internet, here are some things you can do to establish your personal brand online:
If you don't have a strong presence on the Internet, here are some things you can do to establish your personal brand online:
- Create a blog. Demonstrate your expertise, but don't abandon your blog once you start it. Potential employers may think that you lack commitment if you start a blog and then abandon it after 2 months.
- Create a profile on LinkedIn. My profile can be found here: http://www.linkedin.com/in/DrJosephKim
- Consider participating in other social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter.
- Publish articles or blog posts on different websites. Many bloggers (including me) will allow others to publish "guest blog posts."
- Create your personal website and get your own domain. Consider this a one-page CV or resume. Or, you may wish to highlight some of your major accomplishments. You can view my personal site (that mainly focuses on my blogs) here: http://www.DrJosephKim.com

Effectively leveraging social media to find a job or make a career transition
Do you know how to leverage your social network to find a new job? What if you're making a career transition? If you're a physician considering an alternative career, then maybe you should learn about your options by reaching into your network. The problem is that many physicians get busy and isolated from their classmates and peers. So, how can you leverage social media? To start, I'd encourage you to join LinkedIn, create a free profile, and look for classmates from medical school and college. Make sure to join our group (Society of Physicians with Non-Clinical Careers) on LinkedIn for some interesting discussions about non-clinical jobs.
Finally, there's Facebook. I realize that many physicians don't wish to join Facebook. They want privacy and they don't want their patients finding them on Facebook. Well, Facebook has changed its privacy settings, so it's pretty easy to join Facebook and stay out of search results. This way, your patients probably won't find you. Plus, there are other things you can do to maximize your privacy on Facebook. Make sure to show your support by becoming a fan of NonClinicalJobs.com on Facebook.
I won't get into Twitter in this blog post, but I think you get the general idea. In order to effectively leverage social media, you need to expand your personal network, meet new people, talk about job opportunities, learn about your career options, and let people know that you're interested in making a career change.
