Medicine and Business

Make sure to read this article from "Bench and Bedside," the Stanford University School of Medicine Alumni Association Magazine. The article is titled, "Medicine Gets Down (and Up) to Business" and it highlights several highly-accomplished venture capitalists like Victor Perlroth, MD ’00, MBA ’01: The Serial Entrepreneur and innovators like Meetpaul Singh, ’96, MS ’97, MD ’00, MBA ’04: The Technology Innovator. The article also highlights the accomplishments of Kevin Grimes, MD, MBA ’93: The Mentor and Coach and Alexa Bisinger, MD candidate ’11, MBA candidate ’11: The Flexible GenNexter.

Notice a common theme here? These are all MD/MBA students or graduates. If you didn't get an MBA during medical school, it's never too late to go back to business school to pursue an MBA. That's what I'm doing.

Given that the article was published last year, I'm sure that some of these folks are probably engaged in different ventures by now. That's the common theme among entrepreneurial, business-minded individuals who are actively seizing new opportunities in this rapidly-evolving world of health care.

Connecting with other physicians at the Medicine 2.0 conference at Stanford #med2

Over the weekend, I was at Stanford attending the Medicine 2.0 conference and the Stanford Summit. It was great to connect with physicians who are involved in social media or mobile health. Here are some of the physicians I met at Medicine 2.0:

At Medicine 2.0, attendees were actively using social media during the conference. People were sending Tweets using the #med2 Twitter hashtag, posting updates on Facebook, sharing information on LinkedIn, and blogging.

Next year, the Medicine 2.0 conference will be in Boston at Harvard Medical School. I hope to see you there!

Biodesign Innovation Fellowship (for surgical residents)

Stanford University offers a novel opportunity called the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship for surgical residents.

Surgical Fellowship

A subset of the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship is the Surgical Fellowship - available to surgical residents in their research years. They join the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship and spend two years. Those who wish to join the Innovation fellowship but are also completing their Surgical Residency or Fellowship may apply for the special Innovation Surgical Fellowship, which is a two-year program.

FDA Fellowship

Certificate in Healthcare or Biomedical Informatics

Don't have time to pursue a master's degree in medical informatics? How about a certificate? There are several universities offering certificate programs in health IT. For instance, Drexel University offers a Certificate in Healthcare Informatics. Drexel and quite a few other universities offer these certificate through an online curriculum. Distance learning technology has improved dramatically over the past several years and it's become very popular among those interested in pursuing a career in health information technology (health IT).

Top Business Schools According to Forbes

According to the August 24, 2009 issue of Forbes Magazine, the top 10 business schools are:

They list 50 schools but I'm not going to include the entire list. GMAT scores for the top schoools are typically in the 700's. So are you thinking about B-School? Vave you taken your GMATs? Some business schools will actually allow you to waive the GMAT if you have a terminal or doctorate degree. Sounds nice, doesn't it? If you're a physician, you've probably taken enough standardized tests. I don't think you'll miss the GMAT if you can manage to avoid it.

Non-Clinical Medical Careers in Politics

Do you think that it's a good time to get into healthcare politics? So many healthcare issues are being discussed in Washington right now. If you're passionate about politics, maybe you'd be interested in investing in some formal education.

The Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM) at the George Washington University offers a Master of Professional Studies in Political Management. The George Washington University's programs are co-developed by university content specialists and outside partners, including government agencies, professional associations, consulting organizations, business and industry leaders.
