The title "Medical Director" can mean so many different things in the world of health care. In a hospital or health system, a medical director may have different levels of administrative responsibilities, but is often still primarily involved in patient care. 

In the pharmaceutical industry, you'll find a wide variety of jobs titled "Director, Medical Affairs" and some of those people have a PharmD or PhD. Jobs for physicians may revolve around clinical research, trials, payer reimbursement, health economics and outcomes research, marketing, or drug safety monitoring. You may be involved providing clinical leadership with scientific and clinical advice. Or, you may design, develop, manage, analyze, interpret, write, present, and publish clinical and non-clinical studies. You may support payer reimbursement by providing clinical information and insight.

Essential Duties and Job Functions: The field-based MS will join a team of medical scientists, reporting to the director. He/she will disseminate clinical information about Gilead’s innovative products to thought-leaders, academic institutions, centers of excellence and professional organizations.

• Participate in advisory boards, symposia and educational programs, such as speaker training and clinical conferences
• Collaborate with colleagues in other functional areas, including Clinical Research, Medical Communications, Sales and Marketing
• Adhere to applicable pharmaceutical codes, Office of Inspector General (OIG) guidelines and Gilead policies

Pharmaceutical industry leading job cuts: "Job Cuts Surge 60% to 16-Month High"

Do you think the recession is ending, or are we seeing a second dip? According to a recent report released by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., the pharmaceutical industry is leading all the other industries in job cuts:

The pharmaceutical led all other industries with 13,493 job cuts in July, most of which (13,000 to be exact) resulted from a multi-year reduction in force announced by New York-based Merck & Co.

The 66,414 job cuts last month were up 60 percent from the previous month, when employers announced plans to shed 41,432 workers. The July figure was 59 percent higher than the 41,676 layoffs recorded in July 2010. It was the largest monthly total since March 2010, when 67,611 job cuts were announced by the nation’s employers.

Biotech Firm to Add 160 Jobs in Missouri

BERKELEY, Mo. -- A manufacturer of biologic pharmaceuticals will locate a production facility in the St. Louis County town of Berkeley, retaining 160 workers from a plant it purchased and eventually adding another 160.

Gov. Jay Nixon was in Berkeley Wednesday for the announcement by Gallus Biopharmaceuticals. The company bought the Centocor Biologics facility and plans to hire about 160 Centocor workers. Gallus also plans to create 160 new jobs over the next five years.

Pharmacovigilance Jobs

28,000 new jobs added in health care

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 28,000 new health care jobs were added in August. The largest gains were in ambulatory health care services (+17,000) and hospitals (+9,000). The unemployment rate remains at 9.6 percent (roughly unchanged). We still have 14.9 million unemployed people in this country.

When's the U.S. economy going to fully recover? The good news is that things don't seem to be getting much worse, so let's hope that things will slowly get better.

Medical Education Jobs

Have you considered working in the field of medical education? The medical education industry can refer to:

1. certified continuing medical education or CME (governed by the ACCME)
2. promotional medical education (which falls under advertising regulatory guidelines outlined by the FDA)

There are currently a number of job openings in the area of "medical education" and you can view those Medical Education jobs here.

If you're a physicians, you'll probably be overqualified for some of the medical education jobs that are listed (such as medical education coordinator, CME coordinator, etc.).

However, you might be interested in jobs such as Medical Education Manager jobs or Medical Education CME Writing jobs.

Health care added 27,000 jobs in July

Here's an "Employment Situation" update from the BLS:

• Health care added 27,000 jobs in July.
• Over the past 12 months, health care employment has risen by 231,000.
• Employment in professional and business services was little changed (-13,000) in July. The number of jobs in temporary help services showed little movement (-6,000) over the month.
• Employment in financial activities continued to trend down in July, with a decline of 17,000. So far this year, monthly job losses in the industry have averaged 12,000, compared with an average monthly job loss of  29,000 for all of 2009.

Both the number of unemployed persons, at 14.6 million, and the unemployment rate, at 9.5 percent, were unchanged in July.
