Administrative medicine: a medical specialty?

Back in 1986, there was an article published titled, "Administrative medicine: a new medical specialty?" The health care system has changed dramatically since then and the definition of "administrative medicine" continues to evolve as more physicians leave the bedside to pursue careers in business and administration. In 2009, Dr. Arthur Lazarus, a board member of the American College of Physician Executives, published a paper titled, "Professional and career issues in administrative medicine."

If you're interested in a career in administrative medicine, I would suggest the following:

First, join the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and get involved in these organizations.

After you've gotten involved, consider whether you'll want to pursue a master's degree. Many physicians choose to get either an MBA or an MMM (master of medical management) to strengthen their credentials, solidify their knowledge base, and expand their network in the world of medical administration.

ACPE, ACMPE, ACHE where the E = Executives

Recently, I've received a number of questions from people who find themselves a bit confused by these similar acronyms where the AC = American College and the E = Executives. Let's take a look at these 3:
  • ACPE = American College of Physician Executives
  • ACMPE = American College of Medical Practice Executives
  • ACHE = American College of Healthcare Executives
ACPE is the nation's largest health care organization for physician executives — doctors who hold leadership and management positions. Founded in 1975.  http://acpe.org

ACMPE merged with Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) in 2011 to form the MGMA-ACMPE.  http://www.mgma.com

ACHE is an international professional society of more than 40,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. Founded in 1933. http://www.ache.org

Get involved with your local ACHE chapter

This fall, get involved with your local ACHE chapter. It's a great way to expand your network and meet leaders working in various health care settings. In my area, the chapter is titled the "Healthcare Leadership Network of the Delaware Valley."

You can find more information about local ACHE chapters here.

Your ACHE chapter provides educational programs, local information, and volunteering and networking opportunities to help you develop crucial leadership skills and stand out in this dynamic healthcare environment. Chapters also provide senior-level executives and other established leaders opportunities to give back to the profession. You'll also have access to local education programs that qualify for ACHE Face-to-Face Education credits.

The American College of Healthcare Executives is an international professional society of more than 40,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. ACHE offers its prestigious FACHE credential, signifying board certification in healthcare management.

FACPE, FACHE, FACMPE

Recently, I've encountered a number of questions from people asking, "what do FACPE, FACHE, FACMPE mean?" What does it mean to have these acronyms after your name?

Most physicians know that the "F" usually stands for "Fellow" whenever you see these types of strange acronyms. We frequently see acronyms such as FACP (Fellow of the ACP - American College of Physicians), FAAFP (Fellow of the AAFP - American Academy of Family Physicians), etc.

So, let's decipher what FACPE, FACHE, FACMPE mean:
  • FACPE: Fellow of the ACPE -  American College of Physician Executives
  • FACHE: Fellow of the ACHE -  American College of Healthcare Executives
  • FACMPE: Fellow of the ACMPE -  American College of Medical Practice Executives
I'm a member of ACPE and ACHE and I'd encourage you to join as well. Attend their annual conference, go to regional chapter meetings, and expand your professional social network of connections. You may also wish to explore these other organizations: Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).
