Physicians working in Health IT here at #HIMSS13
Here at the 2013 HIMSS conference, I am surrounded by physicians working in health IT. Most of them work in hospitals and health systems. They are CMOs, CMIOs, and Medical Directors of Informatics. I am also surrounded by physicians working in health IT companies. These companies may be electronic health record (EHR) companies, mobile health startups, wireless providers like Verizon and AT&T, and a variety of computer and software companies. Did you know that Dell has a Chief Medical Officer? AT&T has a CMIO. Several physicians work at Microsoft.
HIMSS is a great networking conference. There are over 35,000 people here at this massive event, but there are plenty of networking events to connect with entrepreneurs and executives.
If you are here attending the HIMSS conference, I hope you'll join me at some upcoming networking events:
HIMSS13 coverage is sponsored by HP. HP’s extensive portfolio of products, solutions, services and relationships can help your healthcare organization achieve quality business practices and provide quality patient care.

CMIO Survival Guide
Don't miss this great book if you're thinking about becoming a CMIO someday. The The CMIO Survival Guide: A Handbook for Chief Medical Information Officers and Those Who Hire Them
Despite the promise of improving care and other benefits, EMR implementations are highly disruptive to the organization. This book prepares you to lead or participate successfully in change management/technology adoption efforts, so that meaningful use of EMRs can be achieved. The authors provide successful strategies to plan and implement change. The content is based on their decades of combined experience managing the people side of implementation. The book covers the importance of making a business case for change management, explaining why technology implementations will not deliver benefits without significant focus on users. It describes two critical success factors in any large-scale change management efforts--a clear vision and effective leadership. Sections of the book deal with establishing a foundation for change; building commitment; and developing requisite skills in change management. The book includes numerous lessons learned, tips for success, best practices and case studies from organizations that have handled change well. (2010.)

Health Information Technology (Health IT) jobs for physicians
- Analysts and Implementation Specialists. Physicians are selecting and implementing electronic health/medical record (EHR or EMR) and they need assistance in knowing which EHR to select, how to implement the system, how to modify their current workflow structure, how to train their staff, etc. Look for titles such as Clinical Systems Analyst, Lead Analyst, Informaticist, Implementation Specialist, Health IT Specialist, Pharmacy Analyst, Medical Analyst, Systems Analyst, etc. Many of these jobs are highly technical positions that require you to have a background in engineering, programming, etc.
- Directors and Managers. There will always be a need for managers to oversee projects. So, you may see job titles such as Project Manager, Team Lead, Health IT Director, EHR or EMR Manager, EHR or EMR Director, Director of Health Information Management, Medical Director of Informatics, CMIO, etc.
- Trainers and Application Coordinators. These positions may still be of interest, even though they aren't the most appropriate settings for physicians.
- Consultants. Physicians make great consultants, especially for start-up companies that are entering the health IT space. Do you have what it takes to be an EMR or EHR Consultant? Medical Informatics Consultant. Clinical Informatics Consultant.

Health IT jobs for physicians looking for non-clinical careers
With all the recent buzz about health information technology (health IT), you may be wondering: "what are the various types of health IT jobs that are currently available for physicians?"
You probably won't find many books on this issue. The health IT field has been growing over the past decade, but we're about to see a significant explosion because of the HITECH provisions within ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act). Recently, I've seen more webinars and conferences on health IT then I've ever seen. There is a lot of excitement about health IT, but many physicians who are interested in a non-clinical career in health IT simply don't know where to begin.
You may not jump to a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) right away, but there are many other types of opportunities depending on your level of training and experience. I predict a growing role for health IT consultants who can help physicians, clinics, offices, and hospitals choose and implement electronic health record (EHR) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) solutions. We will see an increase in e-prescribing usage. More physicians will rely on smartphones and other mobile computing devices on a regular basis. EHR companies will be looking for more clinical experts and consultants who can help them market, deploy, and distribute their products. Strategic partnerships will occur among companies that wish to combine resources and offer turn-key packages. Start-up companies will be looking for clinical experts and medical consultants who can help them develop marketable services and/or products. The bottom line is that I think we will see a large growth of non-clinical physician jobs in the health IT industry.
So, are you excited about information technology? Do you have strong computer skills? Maybe you should consider a career in health IT. Interested in receiving career advice from some health IT physicians? Contact me if you're interested.

Health IT Jobs for Physicians
There are so many different types of health information technology (Health IT) jobs for physicians. If you're a seasoned executive, then you could be a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO). However, if you're not so "seasoned," then you'll have to earn your stripes. But where do you begin?
Sometimes, the best starting place is to join some professional societies and to learn about the different types of opportunities that are out there. Let me suggest 3 major organizations:
You can learn so much by joining these groups and participating in some of the educational sessions. The landscape of health IT is changing so quickly that it remains critical to stay on top of all the updates and legislative changes that are impacting this industry. If you feel like you lack formal health IT education, then you may also want to consider some formal programs (either master's level or post-graduate fellowships) in health informatics (or they may be called medical informatics, biomedical informatics, etc.).
