CMO and CMIO Jobs

Interested in a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) job? Because both CMO and CMIO job titles include the words Chief, Medical and Officer, you're likely to see CMO jobs alongside CMIO jobs if you're searching for CMIO positions. Of course, you can also simply type "CMIO" into a job search engine (but then you may find some Cost Management Implementation Office (CMIO) jobs too).

You may also want to look for Director of Health Information jobs if you don't have formal CMIO experience.

Organizations currently hiring CMIOs include:

Deaconess Health System
Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS)
Community Health Systems, Inc.  (CHS)
Advocate Health
And many others.

Find those CMIO jobs here on the NonClinicalJobs.com Job Board.

The Role of the CMIO (Chief Medical Information Officer)

What is the role of the CMIO (Chief Medical Information Officer)? Many organizations don't even have a CMIO. The HITECH Act has accelerated the need for CMIOs around the country, so before you start filling out job applications, get some information about this new and emerging position.

Here are four practical tips:

  1. Read:  The Role of the CMIO
  2. Subscribe to CMIO.net
  3. Join HIMSS and AMDIS
  4. Consider attending the AMIA CMIO Boot Camp.

Finally, make sure to connect with other CMIOs so that you can learn from their experiences. There's a good chance that they will all have a different story to tell of how they got into their respective positions.

Health IT Jobs for Physicians

There are so many different types of health information technology (Health IT) jobs for physicians. If you're a seasoned executive, then you could be a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO). However, if you're not so "seasoned," then you'll have to earn your stripes. But where do you begin?

Sometimes, the best starting place is to join some professional societies and to learn about the different types of opportunities that are out there. Let me suggest 3 major organizations:
  1. American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA)
  2. Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS)
  3. Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)
You can learn so much by joining these groups and participating in some of the educational sessions. The landscape of health IT is changing so quickly that it remains critical to stay on top of all the updates and legislative changes that are impacting this industry. If you feel like you lack formal health IT education, then you may also want to consider some formal programs (either master's level or post-graduate fellowships) in health informatics (or they may be called medical informatics, biomedical informatics, etc.).

Response to a "Miserable Intern"

A "miserable intern" asked me a question the other day. The summarized question was: Should I continue through this miserable residency? I'm really interested in technology and I'm not even in the specialty of my choice because I didn't match into it. I hate internship and I want to quit. Help!

Here was my reply:

If you can stick with residency and complete it, you'll be in a much better position. I encourage you to do that. Maybe you'll be happier in a different specialty?

Why didn't you match into ? Is there something you can do to try again? If you're willing to devote 1 year to research, then you may have a solid chance. I know several students who were able to get into a very competitive residency because they were willing to devote a full year to research.

The world of health IT is growing rapidly, especially because of Obama's stimulus plan. There are many opportunities in this field, but you'll be in a better position to pursue most of them if you've completed your residency. In fact, you'll be in the best position if you complete a fellowship in medical informatics. Or, you can get a master's degree in bioinformatics, medical informatics, or health informatics. (Each university has a different term for this degree - isn't that confusing?)

Pursue that path and in several years (or more) you may find yourself being the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO)/Director of Health Informatics somewhere. You can send me a check for my free advice when you get there!
