Smartphones and Improving Neurologic Care on ReachMD

You won't want to miss this excellent ReachMD program titled, "Smartphones and Improving Neurologic Care." You don't have to be a neurologist to appreciate the pearls that are shared by Dr. Busis. I was driving this morning when I heard the program. Here's a brief summary:

Is there an app for helping your patients improve their health? In fact, there are many. Dr. Neil Busis, chief of the division of neurology, department of medicine, at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Shadyside and Practice and Technology editor of AAN.com, talks with host Dr. Anthony Alessi about the latest mobile technologies used to monitor patient experiences with chronic neurological issues, such as migraines and epileptic seizures. They also discuss how even standard smartphone functions can be used to improve the health and medical care of patients, and why text messaging is changing healthcare around the world.

You can hear the program on ReachMD online here.

This program is part of the NeuroFrontiers series on ReachMD.

NeuroFrontiers is produced in collaboration with the American Academy of Neurology and explores new research, diagnosis and treatment in all areas of neurological disease. This series also addresses the most relevant clinical topics, trends, news and advances pertaining to all areas of the practice of Neurology.

Featured Physician Executive: David G. Preskill, MD

This week, our featured physician executive is David G. Preskill, MD. He is Founder and Chief Medical Officer of ReachMD.

As both practitioner and entrepreneur, Dr. Preskill understands the challenges that the current environment presents to medical professionals as well as the tools and opportunities available for addressing them. Cognizant of the rapidly expanding body of medical research, and the time constraints of healthcare, Dr. Preskill envisioned ReachMD as a platform for helping busy practitioners keep pace with medical discoveries and dialogue without compromising on practice ideals or family demands. ReachMD is his second start-up venture. In 1999, he was the creative force and founder of Inner Vision Imaging, LLC, a medical device company that attempted to develop in-vivo imaging solutions to provide surgeons and pathologists cellular level detail of tissues and organs without the necessity to perform biopsies or organ removals. A board-certified OB/GYN, Dr. Preskill has been in private practice in the Chicago suburbs for 12 years. Dr. Preskill graduated from Northwestern Medical School and the University of Illinois-Urbana.

"Short and Long Term Effects of Reform on the Healthcare Market" on ReachMD

I'd encourage you to listen to this ReachMD program titled, "Short and Long Term Effects of Reform on the Healthcare Market." The host for the show is Tim Rush, president and founder of Healthcare Staffing Innovations (HSI). Here's a brief description of that ReachMD segment which is a part of a new series called, "Your Career In Healthcare."
We all know that healthcare reform may change the way healthcare professionals practice medicine, but how might reform also change the way in which we either find employment or staff our facilities? Joining host Tim Rush to discuss the short and long term effects that healthcare reform might have on the the healthcare employment market is Phil Miller, vice president of communications for the country's largest temporary healthcare staffing business, AMN Healthcare.
Are we seeing more physicians choosing to leave clinical practice and pursue non-clinical job opportunities? Listen to this ReachMD segment to learn more. (login required for ReachMD)

My ReachMD commentary about physicians in leadership

At the end of this week, I'll be attending the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) annual conference. Isn't it fitting that I should also discuss physician leadership on ReachMD? You can hear my ReachMD commentary titled, "Physician Executives & Healthcare Change."

Some of the biggest problems we face in health care revolve around increasing costs, medical errors, resource overutilization, poor population health management, and wide gaps in access to healthcare in many parts of this country. I don’t think anyone would argue against the claim that our health care system needs improvement. And one way to bring about positive change is to have physicians step up and take executive positions.

In a recent Harvard Business Review article titled, “Turning Doctors Into Leaders,” Dr. Thomas Lee writes that “health care today needs a new breed of leaders” who are focusing more on “value-oriented, performance-driven health care.”

Mayo medical students can pursue journalism

It was great to see Dr. Sanjay Gupta from CNN at HIMSS10. When people think about medical journalism, they probably think about Sanjay. Well, if you'd like to pursue such a career path, here's something to consider:

According to several recent stories circulating on the Internet, Mayo Medical School is working with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication to start a journalism degree program for its medical students. Mayo Medical School students from Rochester, Minnesota, will come to ASU after their second year of medical school to fulfill a dual master’s degree. They will be completing a mass communications degree.
The degree program at Cronkite is just one of five dual degree programs that ASU offers Mayo medical students. Other degree programs with ASU are medical-law degrees, medical-bio engineering and medical-MBA at W. P. Carey School of Business and medical-bio informatics.
Read more about this at the Stanford SCOPE blog. Or, you can also read the story on statepress.com.

Thanks to Paula from ReachMD for pointing me to this story.
