Another journal article looking at physician burnout

The theme of physician burnout seems to come up over and over these days. Every week, I receive a series of emails from doctors who want to leave clinical medicine because they're just burning out and they're very dissatisfied with the practice of medicine.

This recent Archives of Internal Medicine article is titled, "Burnout and Satisfaction With Work-Life Balance Among US Physicians Relative to the General US Population."

Here's the conclusion:

Burnout is more common among physicians than among other US workers. Physicians in specialties at the front line of care access seem to be at greatest risk.

What are you doing to avoid burnout?

Speaking with physicians about social media here at the #ACPE Fall Institute

This weekend, I'm in Arizona speaking with physician executives about social media. I'm here with Dr. Kent Bottles (@kentbottles) at the ACPE Fall Institute and we're going to be continuing the social media conversation all day (and into dinner with small groups of physicians).

It's encouraging to see that physician executives who have never explored social media are willing to give it a try. They're signing up for Twitter accounts on their smartphones. They're joining the ACPE Group on LinkedIn. They're signing up for Doximity to have conversations with other physicians. They're creating Facebook pages for their practices.

Social media is a powerful tool that can connect physicians with knowledgeable and influential experts in many different domains of health care like health care reform, health IT, health policy, mobile health, etc.
