Profile of an AMDA Medical Director

Many physicians choose to transition from the clinical world of medicine into the non-clinical world of healthcare administration. If you have experience working in the long-term care setting (such as skilled nursing facilities) and you're interested in becoming a medical director, then I suggest that you join AMDA (American Medical Directors Association) and become a certified medical director or CMD.

  • 80% are Board Certified (primarily in IM and FP)
  • 43% have CAQ in Geriatrics
  • The average number of years in LTC practice: 17.6
  • The average number of years as Medical Director in LTC: 12.6
  • Average number of LTC facilities served: 1-2
  • Average facility size: 100 beds per facility
  • Average number of hours spent as Medical Director per facility per month: 6-10
  • Average pay per hour for Medical Director Services has increased slightly from: $119.00 in 2002 to $130.00 in 2004 to $140 in 2006 to $161 in 2008
