I'm at HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) and it's great to see how they're providing professional development resources for health IT professionals. In addition to providing CPHIMS review courses, HIMSS is doing much more. CPHIMS is a professional certification program for healthcare information and management systems professionals. Individuals who meet eligibility criteria and successfully complete the CPHIMS exam are designated a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS).

Here's a brief summary of what HIMSS is doing with the ONC:

HIMSS is pleased to be working very closely with the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) on workforce development initiatives that will lead to career pathways and certifications that will address the needs of entry level technical professionals through those most advanced in the industry. And to nurture the HIT professional, HIMSS has placed great emphasis on the HIT Emerging Professional, defined as someone with five years or less work experience in healthcare IT, by creating a series of informational webinars around a variety of topics. Further, the HIMSS eLearning Academy features over 16 courses and 500 archived case study-type sessions across 21 different HIT topic areas that will also supplement the HIT professional’s toolbox.

The world of Health IT is full of acronyms.You can expect to see this one after many people's names fairly soon. It's CPHIMS. Do you know what it stands for?

Individuals who meet eligibility criteria and successfully complete the CPHIMS exam are designated a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS).The CPHIMS credential provides both internal and external rewards. In order to become a CPHIMS, you must pass an exam. That's right, it's time to study and look for some test-prep courses.

The examination consists of 115 multiple-choice test items, presented during a 2-hour session. Scoring is based on 100 items pre-selected for desirable psychometric characteristics. The additional 15 test items are included as pretest items. Performance on pretest items does not affect a candidate’s score.

Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility standards are designed to include those experienced in healthcare information and management systems, but exclude others. To participate in the CPHIMS examination, a candidate must qualify under one of the following options.

• Baccalaureate degree plus five (5) years of associated information and management systems experience*, three (3) of those years in healthcare.
• Graduate degree plus three (3) years of associated information and management systems experience*, two (2) of those years in healthcare.

*Associated information and management systems experience includes experience in the following functional areas: administration/management, clinical information systems, e-health, information systems, or management engineering.

How many CPHIMS are out there? Right now, the list is relatively small. In fact, you can view that list right here. However, you can be sure that this list will grow considerably over the next few years as ARRA dollars get poured into the health care system (HITECH provisions within ARRA).

CPHIMS certification and careers in health IT

Are you familiar with the CPHIMS Certification? CPHIMS stands for: Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems. CPHIMS is a professional certification program for healthcare information and management systems professionals. If you're considering a career switch into the world of health information technology (Health IT, HIT, or now HITECH), then I would urge you to join HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) and take the necessary steps to become a CPHIMS. Of course, you'll need to gain some experience before you can simply go out and become certified, so don't expect that it will happen overnight.

Right now, most physicians who are involved in health IT do not have any type of formal training or certification in informatics. However, I see this trend changing as more people are pursuing biomedical informatics fellowships, master degree programs, and professional certifications such as CPHIMS.

CPHIMS Certification

Earlier, I wrote about Health IT certification. I'd like to clarify and say that there are different bodies that are currently providing various levels of "certification." Are we talking about a certificate or some level of board certification? (Is there currently any type of certifying board?)

Perhaps the more important question is: who provides the certification?

CPHIMS is a professional certification program for healthcare information and management systems professionals. Individuals who meet eligibility criteria and successfully complete the CPHIMS exam are designated a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS).

The CPHIMS Certification is governed by the CPHIMS Certification Committee, a HIMSS committee of individuals with subject-matter expertise in the content tested on the examination. This Committee is responsible for assuring that certification meets high standards required for the profession; and is charged with setting general standards for the program, developing examination specifications, constructing new editions of the examination and establishing passing standards for the examination.
