Would you consider going through a residency in business? What about a fellowship in business? Pharmacy school graduates have the option to pursue a residency in the pharmaceutical industry. Should medical students also have the same option?
Right now, there are no medical residencies in business or industry. Medical students who have a very strong interest in business are more likely to be enrolled in dual degree MD/MBA programs. Although you won't find a residency in industry, you will find a one-of-a-kind medical fellowship out there called the Physician Executive Fellowship program at WellPoint.
At some point, perhaps medical student graduates will have the option to pursue a non-traditional residency in the world of business. Maybe the pharmaceutical industry will provide a residency option. Perhaps consulting firms will begin offering residencies for MD/MBA graduates. It would be innovative to see health information technology companies offering residencies for medical school graduates who have a strong interest in technology.
