Physician salaries

What do you think about the physician salaries listed on Indeed.com? The phrase "average" can be very misleading, don't you think? After all, how do you define "average" when you're talking about salary ranges that are so broad? Indeed.com lists the average physician salary as $98,000. That seems a bit low to me, especially when you consider that specialists are making so much more.

Here's an interesting tidbit from Indeed.com:
"Average Physician salaries for job postings nationwide are 51% higher than average salaries for all job postings nationwide."
When you go to look at the chart, you'll see that it also includes Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner salaries. You can play around with this tool by clicking the box labeled, "Search Job Titles Only." You can enter job titled like "family physician" or "surgeon." You can also see what happens if you type "neurosurgeon." I think you'll see that the salary figures generated by this salary tool are grossly inaccurate.

  1. Interesting data set. It seems to be consistent with recent OECD data that compares US physician pay with physicians in other countries: http://blog.trialdox.com/?p=97.

We follow physician pay because incentives are so important in driving quality clinical processes and outcomes.
