Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators

The Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators (APPI) has the following mission: To promote and advance excellence and professionalism in pharmaceutical medicine and clinical research.

Through the establishment of pharmaceutical medicine as a rigorous and demanding scientific and managerial discipline, The Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators (APPI) seeks to enhance the image of pharmaceutical physicians.

Pharmaceutical medicine is the discipline of medicine devoted to the discovery, research, development and the support of ethical promotion and safe use of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, medical devices and diagnostics.

A Pharmaceutical Physician is a physician who spends the majority of his/her professional time in matters related to pharmaceutical medicine.

APPI exists to serve its membership, and has an evolving program of meetings in response to expressed needs. APPI organizes scientific and educational activities on a variety of issues concerning pharmaceutical medicine. APPI establishes a collegial dialogue with other medical specialty groups, academics, societies and associations.

APPI also exists as a forum for members to express views and receive advice and support on improving the contribution of pharmaceutical medicine to the discovery, development, registration and marketing of innovative and useful medicines.

Membership Eligibility
All pharmaceutical physicians and all physicians in good standing (M.D., D.O., M.B.B.S, or equivalent degree) who, in addition to their other professional work, devote a substantial portion of their time to 1) performing studies of drugs, biologics, devices, vaccines or diagnostics; 2) activities related to research, development or regulation of these products; or 3) teaching the subject of pharmaceutical medicine and who will uphold the policies of APPI and subscribe to its bylaws.

The Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators (APPI) is an organization that provides a host of resources for physicians who are in the pharmaceutical industry. They hold conferences, they provide education, and there are many membership benefits associated with the APPI. You can even achieve a certification as a Certified Physician Investigator (CPI). The APPI has a very close relationship with the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP). Don't get that confused with the Association of Clinical Researchers and Educators (ACRE). The first few letters of the acronym are the same "ACR" but the last letter is a P instead of an E. Here's another interesting bit of trivia: The APPI used to be the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians (AAPP).

Another organization that may be of interest is the International Federation of Associations of Pharmaceutical Physicians (IFAPP).

Membership for the APPI is $300/year and to join:

All pharmaceutical physicians and all physicians in good standing (MD, DO, MBBS, or equivalent degree) who, in addition to their other professional work, devote a substantial portion of their time to:

• Performing studies of drugs, biologics, devices, vaccines or diagnostics
• Activities related to research, development or regulation of these products

I've been approached by many physicians who are looking for non-clinical jobs within the pharmaceutical companies. The Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators (APPI) has a simple mission: "To enhance the proficiency of pharmaceutical physicians and physician investigators, the Academy shall promote the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge concerning therapeutic action, investigation and development of medicines and diagnostics, and the protection of the welfare of patients and study subjects." There was an organization called the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians (AAPP), but they folded into the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) and formed the APPI. In other words, the former AAPP is now the APPI. Wow, can you keep up with all these acronyms?
