Don't miss the mHealth Summit this December

Thursday, August 2, 2012

The adoption of mobile devices used in healthcare settings has exploded across the globe, connecting users and spreading more rapidly than any other technology in history. Capitalizing on this growth, mHealth—or use of mobile devices for health purposes—is revolutionizing the ways in which providers deliver and patients access care, how stakeholders use health information to promote well-being, treat disease, support population health and respond to health emergencies around the world.

The 2012 mHealth Summit will build on last year’s success by highlighting emerging best practices from mHealth implementations as well as the latest business, finance, policy and technical perspectives, fostering in-depth dialogue to identify and accelerate cross-cutting value chains and sustainable mHealth business model adoption around the globe. The summit will also provide a dedicated focus on mHealth research, facilitating the development and commercialization of empirically-supported solutions for specific disease states.

Generating supplemental income through telemedicine

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

These days, a growing number of physicians are eager to leave clinical practice to enter the non-clinical business world of health care. However, there is also an opportunity to generate income by virtually "visiting" patients using your webcam and a secure telemedicine portal that offers patients direct access to physicians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You could sign up to provide care through one of these portals, but you'll need to be familiar with interstate telemedicine regulations governing medical licensure. Otherwise, you could end up on a news story because you were practicing medicine in a state (treating a patient who lived in another state) where you did not have a medical license.

The issue concerning medical licensure and telemedicine is a hot topic right now. Many regulatory bodies recognize that telemedicine is a cost-effective way to deliver care, but many physicians face barriers regarding the issue of interstate medical licensure. It's rather cumbersome to get a license in every state. Plus, some states have requirements that literally make it impossible for you to get a license unless you live there.

I've been writing about telemedicine on one of my other websites (see those stories here) and I will be continuing to follow the telemedicine industry closely. There are many overlapping themes with mobile health (mHealth) and telemedicine given that the technologies are converging and mobile devices are becoming powerful telemedicine tools as well. Get familiar with telemedicine because you won't want to miss the opportunity to monetize those virtual visits with your patients. The next major trend will be some sort of concierge televisit through the use of smartphones and tablets.

Growing opportunities to consult for health IT and mobile health startup companies

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

There are a growing number of opportunities to provide consulting services for health information technology (health IT) and mobile health (mHealth) startup companies looking to make an impact in the world of health care. We know that the government is pushing billions of dollars towards health IT innovation and implementation. The use of electronic health records (EHRs) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems is only the beginning. Doctors are using iPads and iPhones, but most are not using mobile devices to their fullest potential. Patients are also becoming empowered about their own health and they're using digital tools to quantify their biometrics. Plus, social media is becoming an integral part of health care and many organizations are looking for clinicians who understand and actively use social media.

This is an exciting time to be in the health care industry and I am constantly encountering startup companies that have innovative ideas and concepts that will transform the health care landscape. To learn more about some of these organizations, make sure to follow my other sites where I regularly write about startup companies, venture contests, conferences, and more! Every year, my wife and I usually take a trip to Boston to revisit MIT. This year, I'm the only one coming to Boston, but I'm sure we'll be here next year with the whole family.

Connecting with other physicians at the Medicine 2.0 conference at Stanford #med2

Sunday, September 18, 2011

Over the weekend, I was at Stanford attending the Medicine 2.0 conference and the Stanford Summit. It was great to connect with physicians who are involved in social media or mobile health. Here are some of the physicians I met at Medicine 2.0:

  • Bryan Vartabedian, MD FAAP, Baylor College of Medicine
  • Homero Rivas, MD, MBA, FACS, Stanford University
  • Larry Chu, MD, MS, Stanford University
  • Jennifer Shine Dyer MD, MPH, EndoGoddess, and eProximiti
  • Bertalan Mesk√≥, MD, Webicina.com
  • Ramez Ethnasios, MD, UCLA
  • And others...
It was also great to spend some time with Enoch Choi, MD. I learned that he used Segway to commute to work. Now I really want one!

At Medicine 2.0, attendees were actively using social media during the conference. People were sending Tweets using the #med2 Twitter hashtag, posting updates on Facebook, sharing information on LinkedIn, and blogging.

Next year, the Medicine 2.0 conference will be in Boston at Harvard Medical School. I hope to see you there!

Thursday, June 9, 2011

I'll be speaking at Mobile Health Expo NYC 2011 about the use of mobile technology in the continuing medical education (CME) industry.

Tuesday June 21, 2011
3:30 - 4:15 pm
New York City
Javits Center

My session is titled, "Mobile Technology in the Continuing Medical Education of Physicians"

Abstract: A physician's continuing professional development is critical to keeping up with advances in medicine and with changes in the delivery of care. As mobile technology becomes an integral part of the clinical workflow process, physicians are becoming more comfortable using mobile devices to learn and to develop professionally. There are currently a wide variety of mobile platforms that offer continuing medical education activities for physicians. We will examine some of the ways that physicians are currently using mobile technology in formal, continuing medical education settings. We will also see how physicians are responding to medical education activities that are developed to educate physicians about the various ways they can use mobile technology to improve patient care. As physicians apply mobile technology in the clinical setting and learn how they can leverage these resources for professional education and development, we will witness a transformation in the way physicians learn and apply evidence-based information at the point of patient care.
