Health IT jobs for physicians who are board certified in clinical informatics

Looking for a new job in health IT? Are you working as a medical director of informatics? As a CMIO?

In case you haven't heard, you can now get board certified in clinical informatics. Clinical Informatics is a subspecialty within the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM). Right now, you can either go through a formal fellowship in informatics or you can demonstrate expertise based on your working experience.

Starting in 2018, all applicants for certification in Clinical Informatics will have to complete successfully a minimum of 24 months in an ACGME-accredited Clinical Informatics fellowship program.
Physicians who practice Clinical Informatics collaborate with other health care and information technology professionals to analyze, design, implement and evaluate information and communication systems that enhance individual and population health outcomes, improve patient care, and strengthen the clinician-patient relationship. Clinical Informaticians use their knowledge of patient care combined with their understanding of informatics concepts, methods, and tools to: assess information and knowledge needs of health care professionals and patients; characterize, evaluate, and refine clinical processes; develop, implement, and refine clinical decision support systems; and lead or participate in the procurement, customization, development, implementation, management, evaluation, and continuous improvement of clinical information systems.

2013 HIMSS Compensation Survey

What is the average salary for a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO)? How about a Director of Medical Informatics? The 2013 HIMSS Compensation Survey can give you the answer, but you need to be a HIMSS member to access the full results.

This year, 34 CMIOs and 10 Directors of Medical Informatics provided their salary information for the survey. The survey also provides information on other health IT positions such as Clinical Systems Analyst, Director of IS/IT, CIO, and more.

The 2013 HIMSS Compensation Survey allows healthcare information technology (IT) professionals to compare salaries and compensation packages. This overview provides information on the overall market. It also provides average salary increase and salary information by key demographic variables, including organizational annual net revenue, facility type, geographic region, gender, professional level and length of service. HIMSS members also have access to an exclusive on-line salary calculator, job descriptions and benefits information.

Data for this survey was collected between August and October of 2013. Invitations were sent to the entire U.S. HIMSS membership, as well as other HIT professionals for whom HIMSS had an e-mail address. Announcements about this survey were also included in HIMSS’ electronic newsletters and on social media websites. Individuals who received the invitation were encouraged to share it with their colleagues. A total of 1,160 responses were received.
  • The average salary in this sample of 1,126 healthcare IT professionals is $113,269. The median salary (that which falls in the middle of distribution) is $95,000.
  • Approximately three-quarters of the sample (73.4 percent) reported working for a healthcare provider organization.
  • Nearly two-thirds (59.9 percent) of respondents indicated that they work for a not for profit organization.
